Get Up Offa That Thing
(and dance ‘til you feel better)
So admonishes James Brown in his hit from the 1970’s. Maybe our post-pandemic bodies aren’t quite ready for dancing (quarantine fifteen anyone?), but there’s always room for improvement. Sitting is better than lying down. Standing is better than sitting. Walking is better than standing. You get the picture. Ease into it if you need to. Do whatever it takes to get back into the swing of things. I know I sound like a broken record but getting back out there is really challenging for some people. Change is difficult. It was difficult to change our habits to stay at home and it’s difficult to break out of our pandemic inspired routines.
Now that the CDC has lifted mask mandates for anyone who has been fully vaccinated, more and more facilities are opening their doors to the public. Our activity groups are beginning to meet again. Are you excited? I am! I thoroughly enjoy meeting with the Take-A-Hike group on Friday mornings for a brisk walk through a park or along a section of the Razorback Greenway. I also look forward to sitting around afterward sipping coffee and chatting about everything and anything. I don’t play BUNCO or Mah-Jongg, but I imagine the conversations are just as lively (and don’t forget about the possibility of snacks – BONUS!). I am really looking forward to meeting with the Book Club again. Finishing a book is sort of anti-climactic if you don’t have an opportunity to talk about it with someone, right?
We are still on hold with our general membership meetings until Good Shepherd opens up to groups again. I really hope we will be good to go for our first coffee meeting of the year in September. The Board has been working hard behind the scenes for the entirety of this pandemic to keep our group intact and moving forward. It will be so rewarding to finally get together again. In the meantime, if you are unsure about whether an activity group is meeting, please reach out to the individual activity chair(s) or to Janet Taylor, our Activity Liaison. All contact information is available on our website: https://www.fayettevillenewcomers.com .
I hope to see more and more of you at various activities over the summer. Try something new, you might like it! Break out of that rut and join in the fun. As Woody Allen put it, “90% of life is showing up.”
Until next time, apply some sunscreen and get out there and get some sun on your newly unmasked face!
